  • •Aims to boost deep-tech startups in critical sectors like Defence and Space
  • •Final fund close of ₹1,000 crore expected by December 2026
  • •Focus on early-stage startups with strong IP and engineering capabilities

IIT Madras has reached a significant milestone with the first close of its deep-tech Unicorn Frontier Fund, securing ₹450 crore. This achievement comes just three months after receiving approval from the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), with the final close of ₹1,000 crore anticipated by December 2026.

The fund, a collaborative effort between the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, IIT Madras Research Park (IITMRP), and venture capital firm Unicorn India Ventures, is supported by a diverse group of backers. Notable contributors include Kris Gopalakrishnan, co-founder of Infosys and chairperson of Axilor Ventures, along with several prominent family offices, institutions, corporates, and banks.

Already, four startups have benefited from the fund's investments. Among them is Hathor, a Chennai-based company developing semi-cryogenic and cryogenic rocket engines for small and medium satellite launch vehicles. Another recipient, Carbelim, aims to transform urban air quality through nature-based decarbonization technology. The fund has also invested in Quanstra, which focuses on single photon detection systems and quantum instrumentation, and Triolt Energy, which is advancing next-generation lithium and lithium energy storage solutions.

The fund targets IP-led, engineering-heavy deep-tech startups, primarily those in the early stages of development that have reached Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 3–4. It plans to build a portfolio of approximately 25 startups, with each receiving an average investment of ₹15–25 crore. The fund's focus spans six key areas where India can develop globally competitive capabilities: Defence Technology, Space Technology, Semiconductors, Manufacturing Technology, AI Infrastructure, and Health Tech.

Strategic Focus Areas

The fund's strategic areas of focus are designed to enhance India's technological capabilities and self-reliance in critical sectors. In Defence Technology, the emphasis is on import substitution, while Space Technology investments include space-qualified hardware. The fund also targets fabless design and IP ownership in the Semiconductor sector. Manufacturing Technology, Robotics & Automation, AI Infrastructure, and Health Tech are other critical areas of investment.

V. Kamakoti, Director of IIT-Madras, described the venture capital fund as a modest effort by IIT-Madras and Unicorn India to help promising startups overcome challenges and potentially become unicorns. Natarajan Malupillai, Group CEO of IIT Madras Research Park & Incubation Cell, emphasized the broader ambition of strengthening India's technology capabilities and positioning the country as a leader in frontier technologies.

Ashwin Mahalingam, Dean of Alumni and Corporate Relations at IIT-Madras, highlighted the intertwined success stories of the alumni and the institution. He noted that initiatives like the VC fund allow alumni to actively invest in the growth and success of the innovation ecosystem at IIT-Madras. Mahalingam also pointed out that the fund addresses the critical need for 'patient capital' essential for the success of deep-tech startups.
